Starting in August 1983, Mattel Electronics started cutting its staff of Intellivision game designers. In three waves of layoffs, the last on January 20, 1984, the video game division of Mattel Inc. was shut down.
Last Saturday, January 24, ten of the game designers returned to their old pizza hangout, Jino's in Lawndale, California, to mark the 25th anniversary of that last layoff.
Attending were Mark Kennedy (Kool-Aid Man, Scooby-Doo's Maze Chase, Dig-Dug), Keith Robinson (TRON Solar Sailer), Stephen Roney (Space Spartans, B-17 Bomber), Bill Fisher (Space Hawk, Space Spartans, B-17 Bomber), John Sohl (Astrosmash, B-17 Bomber), Bob Newstadt (Pinball), David Warhol (Mind Strike, Thunder Castle), Peggi Fiebig (graphic artist), Traci Roux (quality assurance) and Ray Roux (systems).
Most have since found new jobs.
